Salary: Criminalist II $6,264-$7,691 per month plus attractive benefits package.
Criminalist I: $5,299-$6,504 per month plus attractive benefits package.

Duties: This recruitment is for the purpose of hiring a Criminalist II Forensic Firearms and Toolmarks Examiner. If there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates at the Criminalist II level, the City reserves the right to fill the current vacancy with the best qualified candidate at the Criminalist I level and will train as necessary. Prior training and experience in forensic firearms examination are preferred.
Candidates who are casework qualified in forensic firearms/toolmarks casework and who otherwise meet the experience requirements of the Criminalist II classification will be considered for this selective certification process at the Criminalist II level.
The City of Oakland is seeking qualified individuals to fill a Criminalist II vacancy with the Police Services Agency. This is a journey-level professional civilian position in the Crime Laboratory. The laboratory is nationally accredited by the ASCLD-LAB. Under the supervision of the Crime Laboratory Manager, incumbents in this position perform physical and chemical examinations of evidence and provide expert testimony regarding laboratory findings. An opening currently exists in the Forensic Firearms Unit. The incumbent is also expected to engage in crime scene processing and to use professional judgment and skill in the performance of assignments and may provide technical training, guidance, and advice to Criminalist I’s and law enforcement officers. The scope of duties increases as capability and familiarity with laboratory techniques, procedures and equipment develop. The eligibility list established from this examination may be used to fill future permanent full-time and permanent part-time positions in the Firearms Unit.
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
CRIMINALIST I & II:
- Perform physical and chemical examination of evidence using quantitative and qualitative laboratory techniques; evaluate nature, origin and significance of evidence in criminal cases.
- Use instrumentation, apparatuses and techniques such as microscopy, electrophoresis and photography applicable to the assigned job category.
- Examine evidence for biological materials and conduct DNA analysis.
- Research technical journals, textbooks, chemical manuals and other source materials to determine the best methods of performing analytical testing.
- Conduct research into new methods and procedures of scientific criminal investigation.
- Make accurate observations regarding examination; prepare detailed notes and comprehensive written reports regarding examinations.
- Prepare laboratory reports of analysis; maintain records.
- Present fair and impartial court testimony concerning findings as established by laboratory analyses and interpret findings as a qualified expert witness.
- Maintain chain of custody and integrity of evidence under their control.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, instruments and work areas.
- Provide technical assistance to Criminalists in the analysis of various other evidence materials.
- Perform related duties as assigned
CRIMINALIST II:
- Conduct research into new methods and procedures of scientific criminal investigation.
- Provide technical training, guidance and advice to less experienced laboratory personnel, law enforcement officers, or other users of laboratory services in the methods of analysis employed in the laboratory and in the methods of collecting and preserving evidence.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
