Crime Scene Technician

Duties: The purpose of this classification is to preserve and collect evidence at the scene of a crime, to include photographing and examining evidence. Employees in this classification interpret results from laboratory tests; document blood pattern interpretation; prepare documentation and testify in court; and maintain a variety of logs and records.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Takes Police photography and video.
- Processes crime scenes for evidence; collects and preserves evidence; interprets scene and evidence.
- Documents tasks and observations at crime scenes; sketches crime scenes; examines evidence.
- Prepares documentation for court, including photographs, videos, and diagrams; testifies in court hearings, Grand Jury, depositions, and trials.
- Maintains case logs; prepares detailed reports of observations and job duties.
- Attends autopsies.
- Keeps abreast of latest technology in field.
Additional Functions:
- Drives to and from scenes; secures crime scenes.
- Answers the telephone.
- Prepares photo line-ups; fingerprints citizens; processes evidence for other agencies; supplies identification information to other agencies.
- Photographs City events; prepares charts and diagrams for City presentations.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes basic law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
Work Schedule:
Varied hours including weekends and holidays. Employees are required to be on call.
