  • Supervise DNA analysts that perform DNA analysis
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight for specimen accessioning/storage, DNA analysis, and data review
  • Assure that quality standards are followed and that all analyses are performed in accordance with laboratory SOPs and accreditation standards
  • Certify laboratory results
  • Oversee method development, method validation and troubleshoot analytical challenges
  • Perform or delegate instrument maintenance
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a Laboratory Inventory Management System (LIMS)
  • Prepare monthly reports for leadership
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and an expert witness for military litigation proceedings
  • Produce detailed notes and reports
  • Perform technical and administrative reviews of other analysts’ casework
  • Interact and collaborate with other group/team members and other forensic staff to ensure a high quality and accurate product
  • Process and extract forensic and reference DNA samples
  • Perform quantitation, PCR amplification, and analysis on DNA samples, including Sanger sequencing for mitochondrial DNA samples
  • Analyze and interpret data from analysis which typically consists of complex mixtures and low level samples using software platforms such as Genemapper® ID-X and/or Sequence Analysis and Sequencher Plus
  • Produce detailed notes and reports
  • Maintain proficiency in DNA procedures
  • Perform technical and administrative reviews of other analysts’ casework
  • Perform Next Generation Sequencing on DNA samples
  • Mentor and train new DNA analysts and technicians


  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in the Physical Sciences (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry) coupled with 5+ years experience working in an accredited forensic DNA laboratory performing nuclear and/or mitochondrial DNA analyses; OR a Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university in the physical or life sciences (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry) or forensic science coupled with 3+ years experience working in an accredited forensic DNA laboratory performing nuclear and/or mitochondrial DNA analyses
  • Must have coursework in Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Statistics (statistics must include population statistics)
  • Proficient in two or all of the following: autosomal STR, Y-STR, mitochondrial DNA
  • Proficient in the use of multiple amplification kits such as Identifiler®, Yfiler®, MiniFiler™, PowerPlex®, and GlobalFiler®, and BigDye®
  • Proficient on multiple Applied Biosystems® Genetic Analyzers such as 3130, 3130xL, 3730
  • Knowledge and expertise on Next Generation Sequencing platforms such as the MiSeq FGx Forensic Genomics System
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites, excel spreadsheets
  • Skilled communicator who can clearly articulate/communicate via email, telephone calls and video teleconferencing
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Forensic Science with experience in forensic practices (e.g., Chain of Custody, strict adherence to laboratory SOPs, documentation and record keeping)
  • Forensic DNA expert witness testimony
  • Professional certification such as American Board of Criminalistics (ABC)
  • One year of experience working as the lead of a team of DNA examiners is desired
  • First authorship of scientific research in peer reviewed journal and/or presentation of scientific data
  • Knowledge and experience with method and instrument validations
  • Experience with manual and robotic methods
  • Experience in kinship analysis
  • Active in the field of Forensic DNA analysis (e.g., AAFS member)
  • Familiar with database structure and/or a willingness to learn the necessary skills to configure and modify the Laboratory Inventory Management System (LIMS)
