Under direction, performs specialized work in the area of firearm and ballistic evidence testing.

Duties:

  • Performs sophisticated collection, analysis and evaluation of firearm and toolmark related evidence utilizing standardized and industry accepted techniques to classify, compare and identify a variety of firearms, cartridges, cartridge cases, bullets, toolmarks and similarly related evidence.
  • Conducts complete scientific tests of firearms evidence utilizing chemical and microscopic techniques and instrumentation which may include comparison microscopes, forensic photography, and computer networks linked to federal, state and local databases; documents findings; prepares technical written reports of laboratory examinations and communicates directly with law enforcement, attorneys, and various agencies regarding results found; prepares evidence in order to provide expert court testimony as to findings; maintains records and files, stores evidence, keeps abreast of scientific advancements in forensic fields by attending conferences, reading technical journals, seminars, and training sessions.
  • Examinations include firearms identification, firearms operability, bullet comparisons, casing comparisons, serial number restoration, powder pattern examinations, target to muzzle determinations, and other related firearms examinations and crime scene reconstruction.
  • Performs other related functions as required.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three Years of casework experience in a laboratory performing duties of a Firearm and Toolmark examiner.
  • Membership in (or qualified to be accepted as a member within six months of appointment) of the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Special Requirement:
  • Must be court qualified as an expert in the field of firearms and ballistic evidence testing.
Knowledge of:
  • The principles, theories, practices and established methodology associated with firearms examinations; the evidentiary value of a large variety of physical evidence; chemical methods, investigative procedures for collecting, preserving and packaging evidence, laws on admissibility of scientific evidence.
Ability to:
  • Produce clear, precise and accurate analytical reports and effectively provide expert testimony in a court of law; makeup and use of relative chemical reagents; and calibrate, use and maintain various laboratory instrumentation, such as, stereo comparative microscopy, electronic etching procedures, and microscopes such as stereo comparison microscope and binocular stereo zoom microscope; provide expert testimony in a court of law; operate and manage the on-site national ballistic database.
