Duties: NMS Labs is now seeking a regular full-time Forensic Biologist III or IV in our Criminalistics Lab. The hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 4:00pm. The Forensic Biologist will perform forensic serological testing, as well as isolation, amplification, and typing of DNA in forensic casework biological samples. The Forensic Biologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, reporting test results, peer-review, and quality assurance and documentation of analytical processes according to chain of custody and accrediting agency regulations. This position holds responsibility for court testimony, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, method development and implementation, and the training of less experienced staff. Other major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Performs receiving, login, data entry, and handling of biological specimens as needed
  • Develops and understands new and improved methods, their principles and significance.
  • Peer reviews reports, and effectively communicates findings to internal and external clients.
  • Trains and aids entry level/lower level peers in the understanding and application of forensic biology methods; may serve as Technical Leader, if appropriately qualified and designated.


  • The successful candidate will have working knowledge of the following techniques: Serology, DNA extraction, PCR, STRs, and Capillary Electrophoresis, and calculation of genetic frequencies. Other job requisites include excellent communication skills, dependability and a strong work ethic, exceptional attention to detail, ability to teach classes and workshops, and good computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Must meet one of the following circumstances below
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Natural Science with 5-10 years of lab related experience in human forensic DNA analysis
    • A Master’s degree or Ph.D with at least 3 years of lab related experience in human forensic DNA analysis.
  • Coursework in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology) or other subjects providing basic understand of the foundation of DNA analysis is required.
  • Experience with court testimony is preferred.
  • ABC certification is preferred.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to talk, hear, and use and fingers to manipulate computer keyboard, objects, or controls.
  • Ability to move or carry objects from one work location to another, and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to travel for court testimony, as needed.
  • Specific vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
