Under general supervision, the senior criminalist is expected to perform technical forensic work for the Jefferson County Regional Crime Laboratory (JCRCL). Work involves the analysis of biological material from submitted evidence items, generating written technical reports of all examinations and analyses performed, and giving expert testimony in court proceedings.
This is an advanced position and requires knowledge of and experience in the examination and collection of biological evidence, current DNA typing technologies, interpretation and comparison of DNA profiles, and the application of statistical approaches (specifically likelihood ratios and probabilistic genotyping). This position requires adherence to current FBI Quality Assurance Standards, including but not limited to proficiency testing, technical review, instrument maintenance, reagent testing, validation of new procedures, and maintaining the necessary requirements for laboratory accreditation. In addition, this position requires communication with customers (investigators, attorneys, and other law enforcement personnel) related to any forensic biology request for examination and the interpretation of the results obtained. Involves generating written technical reports of all examinations performed. Involves court preparation, providing expert testimony and presentation in legal proceedings.
A Baccalaureate or an advanced degree in a natural science, criminalistics or a closely related field is required. An advanced degree is preferred. Must meet the education requirements of the Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories Three to five years of forensic laboratory experience in human DNA analysis is required. Direct experience with Life Technologies equipment, organic extractions, robotic instrumentation, PrepfilerTM Automate Express extractions, real time PCR and modern STR-PCR techniques is preferred. Preference given for work experience in an accredited laboratory and/or candidates with assessment/audit experience.
