Duties:

  • Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, conducts scientific examinations of physical evidence.
  • Testifies in court concerning the results of an analysis and the methods used to draw the conclusions.
  • Provides informational services to the Charleston Police Department, local law enforcement agencies and the community concerning criminalistics and its application.
  • Maintains the chain of custody and integrity of evidence from the time it is submitted to the laboratory until it is disposed of appropriately.
  • Adheres to the management system including the quality policy, quality objectives, terms of service, policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Seeks opportunities to improve the effectiveness of laboratory operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) or equivalent (degree in chemistry or forensic chemistry preferred); and one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Requires knowledge of current methods and practices employed in the field of criminalistics.
  • Knowledge of analytical instrumentation - its operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the laws and ordinances governing the working jurisdiction of the laboratory.
  • Ability to convey scientific principles clearly and concisely to a lay audience.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive and well-written reports.
  • Valid state issued driver's license.
