Forensic Analyst I - Controlled Substances

West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory, South Charleston, West Virginia

Salary: $29,400 – $54,396 per year

Under general supervision, performs work at the technical level in a crime laboratory assisting higher level analysts by conducting a limited number of basic tasks and analysis required in criminal investigations for law enforcement officials in the State. Performs related work as required.

Provides technical assistance by utilizing elementary methods and procedures in the performance of fundamental and routine tasks and examinations in accordance with well-defined and established procedures.

  • Maintains computer log of cases received.
  • Processes evidence with chemicals, powders and electrolysis.
  • Photographs examination results.
  • Crime scene processing of bodily fluids, fingerprints, trace evidence, etc.
  • Obtains fingerprints from corpses.
  • Evaluates and compares latent prints, footwear evidence, questioned documents and firearm evidence.
  • Processes evidence using scientific equipment such as gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, and infrared spectrometers.
  • Prepares routine chemical standards and reagents.


  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university with a major in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, forensic sciences, natural sciences, or related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment, technology, techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of the procedures and interpretations utilized in performing the analysis of evidence.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
