Duties:

  • Oversees the assembly and preparation of ballistics information for data entry into the Integrated Ballistics Information System (IBIS); extracts and correlates information from databases.
  • Documents the results of all examination activities; prepares reports for all evidence examinations; testifies in court regarding lab findings.
  • Examines and classifies firearms and munitions to determine make, model, and caliber.
  • Conducts microscopic comparisons of bullets and cartridge casings recovered from crime scenes.
  • Performs forensic ballistic analyses including operability exams, firearms test firing, and others as required.
  • Completes periodic checks of equipment to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The incumbent provides expert opinions based on analysis of ballistic examinations of evidence to be used in criminal prosecution.

Requirements:

Knowledge of:
  • Safety practices procedures, protocols and practices used when handling firearms and ammunition; forensic examination procedures;
Skill in:
  • Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; handling and maintaining firearms in compliance with safety regulations and procedures; operating a personal computer; using a microscope to complete forensic ballistics comparisons.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field preferred.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of firearms handling and examination experience, preferably within a law enforcement environment.
  • Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in the Police Station, standing in work areas and walking between work areas, some field work, may be required.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • Positions in this classification are required to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull when performing daily activities.
  • Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier with the proper use of equipment.
  • Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.
  • Some field work may be required with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, constant noise, mechanical, explosive, and fume/odor hazards, toxic waste, and dust.
  • Employees may interact with staff when communicating inspection results both orally and in writing.
