Director of Laboratory Services

Salary: $85,384.00 - $139,152.00 Annually

This position is responsible for supervising and directing the administrative and operational activities of the Laboratory Section of the Office of the Medical Examiner including in-house toxicology and histology services.

Duties:

  • Serves on departmental management team and makes recommendations as to departmental policies; implements policies and procedures and resolves internal workflow and processing issues.
  • Maintains and applies for federal grants for equipment/training for the department.
  • Develops and maintains laboratory budgets and expenditures.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for in-house toxicology and histology services and send-out laboratory services.
  • Consults with and recommends testing protocols and procedures to the medical staff.
  • Researches, evaluates and recommends acquisitions of new laboratory instruments, equipment and software.
  • Supervises laboratory personnel by interviewing potential employee candidates, conducting performance evaluations, establishing individual and group work goals and counseling employees regarding performance challenges and remedies.
  • Liaisons with law enforcement, health care, and outside labs, families and other agencies.
  • Reviews findings on toxicology reports and approves/signs reports prior to its submission to the assigned medical examiner.
  • May perform the more complex, non-routine analysis of body fluids/tissues or direct others how to accomplish these tasks.
  • Interprets results of test findings to quantify drug levels, interactions between drugs and chemicals and determine and evaluate the possible toxic effects.
  • Provides consultative subject matter expertise in forensic toxicology to forensic pathologist medical examiners.
  • Attends various training programs to maintain high performance standards.
  • Testifies in sworn testimony in depositions or in a court/tribunal of law.
  • Completes special projects or assignments as necessary or assigned by the OME Director.

Requirements:

Minimum education and/or experience:
  • A PhD from an academically accredited college or university in Chemistry (organic), Toxicology, Biochemistry, Biology, Biological Sciences or Clinical Chemistry or a closely related field and six (6) years' experience in forensic toxicology laboratory.
Specialized training, certifications, and/or other special requirements:
  • Must currently possess a certificate in good standing as a Forensic Specialist or Diplomate by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) or Forensic Toxicologist Certification Board (FTCB) or have the ability to obtain within two (2) years of hire.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated mastery of theories, principles and concepts of organic chemistry and toxicology/pharmacology.
  • Knowledge of toxicology laboratory instrumentation, equipment and software data systems.
  • Knowledge of program planning and implementation.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze test results and data, and effectively present these findings in a court of law.
  • Ability to direct and organize program activities.
  • Ability to plan, assign and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to develop specific goals, prioritize and organize work/activities to achieve established goals.
  • Ability to maintain good morale, motivation and commitment from others.
Preferred education and/or experience:
  • Seven (7) or more years' experience in forensic toxicology.
  • Experience in a supervisory capacity.
Preferred training, certifications and/or other special requirements:
  • Must possess or be eligible for Arizona DPS certification for alcohol testing.
Working conditions:
  • Requires the ability to work in close proximity to decedents with unusual sights and smells.
  • Requires the ability to work in an environment using protective equipment.
