The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services, CBI-FS, maintains five operational forensic science laboratories throughout the state: Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction, Boulder and Northern Region. Forensic Services is responsible for the collection and preservation of evidence at the crime scene and the subsequent scientific analysis of this physical evidence. The role of our scientists is to evaluate, examine the evidence using the latest state of the art techniques, and objectively testify to their findings for the local, state and federal law enforcement agencies we serve and for the prosecution and defense in court.

Duties:

  • Position is responsible for the development of the Denver forensic laboratory staff. This includes coaching, counseling and providing feedback to these direct reports on technical, administrative and personnel concerns in a timely manner. These interactions may take place one on one or during section/group/committee/laboratory meetings. Additionally, this position must support and promote the transformation of the Forensic Services through daily positive interactions with staff members, assisting others to understand and accept the necessary changes. This position must ensure these direct reports participate in various forms of educational opportunities, including trainings, classes, seminars and conferences within their specific disciplines/subdisciplines and that information received through these opportunities is appropriately shared with management and staff. This individual will provide timely, accurate performance management plans and follow¬≠up to these plans along with the appropriate coaching in order to achieve desired results.
  • This position must ensure all casework or database analysis is performed at the highest level of quality, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, meeting or exceeding CBI's definitions involving accuracy, completeness and timeliness of services. All policies and procedures must be followed by laboratory personnel as outlined in the FBI Quality Assurance Standards (FBI QAS), the Quality Operations Manual (QOM), the Discipline Operations Manuals (DOM) and the Training Manuals for each discipline/sub¬≠discipline. In addition, the position must ensure compliance with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position will implement and monitor the quality assurance programs including technical review and administrative review of cases, as well as proficiency tests and random reanalysis of cases. Position will ensure that all nonconformities or departures from established policies and procedures are identified, corrected, remediated and recurrence is minimized. Additionally, position will assist in the creation/design, implementation and monitoring of the accreditation program for the entire laboratory system and specifically the unit assigned, including conducting regular internal audits to ensure compliance.
  • Position is responsible for assigned section/laboratory/system wide budgetary/grant matters, ensuring all relevant information is accurate, up-to-date and timely. This includes but is not limited to: payroll management, overtime dollars, employee travel, training dollars, purchasing of commodities/equipment, accurate, timely grant management. On an ongoing basis, this position must work in conjunction with designated peer group to ensure proper management of the designated budget and/or shared grant. In addition, the position must keep the Denver Laboratory Director and/or the Forensic Services Director apprised on all pertinent budgetary/grant matters.
  • Other duties may encompass a variety of tasks in order to best serve the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, in Forensics or otherwise. These duties include but are not limited to: assisting in another discipline or laboratory, coaching/ counseling a staff member in another section? communicating information lab or system wide, assisting in a programming or system issue, coordinating details of a case with Investigations, helping another Director resolve a problem, or representing the CBI in an outside event.
  • This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the assigned section in the Denver Laboratory. This includes all technical and administrative aspects in the section.
  • For example: Agency rush requests, pre-submission meetings, backlog management, maintains all necessary equipment and commodities, ensuring all deadlines are met. Position will interact with all levels of personnel within the laboratory and various external customers on these technical/administrative issues. External contacts may include but are not limited to other law enforcement agencies, district attorneys' offices, defense attorneys' offices, vendors, forensic science organizations, and educational institutions.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, forensic science or another natural science field. A copy of your education transcripts must be attached to your application at the time it is submitted.
  • Position also requires three years of full time forensic casework experience or DNA database experience, excluding training and internships, within an ISO/IEC 17025:2005 or ASCLD/LAB Legacy accredited laboratory.
Preferred qualifications
  • Two years of forensic leadership experience (i.e. board experience, technical lead, science trainer, etc.) in an ISO accredited laboratory.
Additional Requirements
  • Applicant must be willing to be fingerprinted, successfully pass a polygraph, drug screen, extensive background investigation, and psychological exam.
