Autopsy Technician

Salary: $30,021.00 - $37,213.00 Annually

Position is responsible for assisting Forensic Pathologist and participating in autopsies to determine cause and manner of death. Assume technical responsibility for evidence collection, radiographic and autopsy procedures.

  • Maintains a variety of records, databases, and logbooks pertaining to autopsy records such as deaths, disposal permits, autopsy quality assurance data and storage of organs.
  • Mixes and prepares preservative solutions as required.
  • Prepares and preserves tissue and specimens. Assists in body dissection
  • Maintains safety and cleanliness of work area; clean, disinfect and dispose of all infectious materials, sterilize body trays.
  • Inventory, order and stock autopsy suite materials and supplies; maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares body for postmortem examinations, washes, dries, weigh, measure and positions body
  • Responsible for receiving and releasing all bodies.
  • Prepares tissues for transportation to external laboratories and ensures proper labeling throughout histological process; label and distributes slides to pathologist; store autopsy specimens for future reference.
  • Enters and maintains system documentation of all work performed ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Sutures, maintains vessels and cleans bodies for subsequent release to funeral homes
  • Assists or performs procedures as indicated for identification of records.
  • Assists in field investigations as needed.


  • Associate's degree or three (3) years experience as an autopsy technician or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of proper practices in the use, care and maintenance of surgical and autopsy equipment, including equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Knowledge of aseptic and antiseptic cleaning and disinfecting, procedures and precautions for using potential disinfectants and chemical preservatives.
  • Valid Indiana driver's license required.
  • Completion of blood borne pathogens training is required within three months of hire.
  • Continued education in autopsy techniques and practices after employment.
Independent Judgment
  • Regular exercise of independent judgment or initiative is used.
  • Established policies and procedures govern some work situations.
