  • Evaluates firearms for entry in the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS).
  • Inventories, documents and evaluates various types of firearms for possible entry into the IBIS database.
  • Test fires appropriate calibers and types of firearms
  • Issues reports accurately reflecting the results of examinations.
  • Testifies in court relating to the results of examination. •
  • Routinely works with the Laboratory Manager, Firearms Examiners, IBIS Imaging Technician, and clerical staff.
  • Maintains a cooperative attitude and tact while routinely interacting with external contacts such as police officers, district attorneys, and laboratory guests.
  • Physical activities include, but are not limited to: Standing, walking, lifting moderately heavy items up to 50 lbs. o
  • Frequent exposures to significant levels of noise, chemical gases and potentially harmful chemical substances, and/or contagious diseases from blood and biological contamination.


  • Bachelor of Science degree from a four year accredited institution with a major in the natural, physical, or forensic sciences.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, basic office software and databases.
  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to safely test and fire all types of firearms on a routine basis.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Valid driver's license (Texas by hire date) and a good driving record.
  • Experience in a firearms laboratory, including experience with the evaluation of various firearms.
