The Crime Scene Investigator Trainee is responsible for taking an active part in the CSI training program with the expectation of the successful completion of this training which will allow the trainee to work crime scene investigations independently. The training program is approximately 400 hours of combined classroom and practical exercises followed by a final competency test to include mock courtroom testimony.

The training consists of, but is not limited to, the following;
  • Collect, document, and preserve evidence at crime scenes.
  • Prepare detailed written reports.
  • Photograph crime scenes using available lighting and flash photography.
  • Video tape crime scenes.
  • Process for latent fingerprints.
  • Produce detailed crime scene diagrams.


  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with citizens or family members who are experiencing traumatic events such as a horrific crime.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain a Texas Drivers’ License to operate a vehicle loaded with crime scene unit equipment and tools.
  • Proven expertise in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Microsoft’s cloud-based service, SharePoint, is required. Working Access is a plus.
  • Wiliness to work extended hours with little or no advance notice
  • Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without accommodations:
    • Ability to stand and walk around for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to complete tasks regardless of the weather or temperature.
    • Ability to complete tasks regardless of foul odors or insect activity
    • Ability to lift and carry, push or pull up to 150lbs.
    • Ability to work unsupervised or in a small group after completion of the appropriate training, completing complex tasks and procedures with minimal or no guidance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Criminalistics, Biology, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Internship in a crime lab and/or a crime scene unit is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Houston Forensic Science Center offers a competitive salary and benefit package.
  • Once training has concluded, employees will be asked to work the overnight shift where shift differential is available.
