Crime Lab Evidence Receiving Technician

The MNPD (Metro Nashville Police Department) Crime Laboratory Evidence Receiving Unit Technician shall be directly accountable to the MNPD Crime Laboratory Evidence Receiving Unit Supervisor for the assistance with the administration and general management of evidence stored within the unit. This position participates in various aspects of the operations and performance involved in an accredited crime laboratory including:

  • Ensuring proper storage and security of physical evidence housed in the Evidence Receiving Unit
  • Assuring compliance of the quality system within the Evidence Receiving Unit.

Duties:

  • Performs any combination of administrative, clerical and scientific duties in assigned unit
  • Assists in the management of laboratory evidence
  • Assists in maintaining of records, security, and quality documents of the unit
  • Communicates with external and internal public and private sources (clients) in the best interest of the laboratory
  • Communicates and interacts with Forensic Scientist Supervisors or designees in best interest of laboratory
  • Works on special projects, prepares reports and presents as assigned
  • Prepares to testify, act as expert witness in criminal court
  • Attends professional meetings as required
  • Assists in preparing the unit for annual accreditation audit and acts as representative of records if requested

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma and three (3) years of experience in shipping, receiving, inventory or related work field. Valid driver license.
  • Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
  • Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of ASCLD/LAB - International laboratory standards
  • Knowledge of chain of custody
  • Knowledge of forensic laboratory practices
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, LIMS, ARMS
  • Ability to create and maintain records
  • Ability to handle inquires
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to analyze and resolve problems
  • Ability to work safely with biological and chemical hazards without presenting a direct threat to self or others

***All positions in the MNPD require an extensive background check.
***Must be willing and able to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed
***Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
