Crime Scene Technician

Salary: $41,000.00 - $64,000.00 Annually

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform highly responsible work in the crime scene processing involving latent fingerprint, DNA collection, photography, sketching, measurements collection of evidence, comparison of Ten-Print to Ten-Print fingerprints, verification of latent fingerprint identifications, AFIS entry, photo line-ups, utilizing Adobe Photoshop, firearms trajectory, blood stain pattern analysis, and court testimony. In addition, latent fingerprint identification, research of new technology, field training of new CSDT's and volunteers. Employees in this classification are accountable for proper management of all items, and adherence to all laws governing the handling of police evidence. Objective is to organize and administer division operations to ensure safety and integrity of evidence, to provide accessibility to authorized personnel, and to ensure the accurate documentation of cataloging, tracking, releasing and disposing procedures.

Duties:

  • Documents and collects evidence from crime scenes through photography, videography, and sketches with measurements, trajectory, blood spatter analysis, notes and written reports to assist in the investigation of crimes.
  • Processes evidence submitted through the Property Room for photos, video analysis and latent fingerprints by using various powders and chemicals to assist in the identification of suspects.
  • Obtains elimination fingerprints from victims and suspects for latent fingerprint comparison, as well as identification verification. Evaluate the quality of latent fingerprints collected from scenes and evidence to determine if the latent fingerprints are of value for comparison.
  • Photographs victims and suspects to document injuries and physical conditions result from violent crimes.
  • Uses an Alternate Light Source to examine collected evidence for body fluid stains, trace evidence (hairs, fibers, etc.) and latent fingerprints. The Alternate Light Source is also used to photograph latent fingerprints with chemicals and fluorescent dyes.
  • Prepares evidence being sent to the County, State, Federal and private Crime Laboratories for analysis.
  • Trains Crime Scene Technicians by preparing instruction manuals and teaching at monthly training sessions. (CST's take turns giving instructions on various aspects of crime scene investigations and other responsibilities of the Crime Scene Investigations Unit.
  • Trains new Crime Scene Technicians in all of the duties and responsibilities of he job.
  • Inventories and maintain the necessary equipment in the Crime Scene vans and lab.
  • Assists the Latent Fingerprint Examiner in submitting latent fingerprints to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
  • Verifies latent fingerprint identifications made by the Latent Fingerprint Examiner.
  • Prepares photo line-ups to assist Detectives and Patrol Officers in their investigations.
  • Performs forensic video analysis of surveillance video tapes and DVD's to obtain visual images of suspects for possible identification of suspects, vehicles, etc.
  • Trains new officers during orientation, including latent fingerprint processing and submission, evidence submission, digital medial submission and the booking process.
  • Takes public relations photographs at department ceremonies and events involving police personnel.
  • Provides support to department members for the following systems: booking, evidence manager, digital management, and rapid ID.
  • Obtains DNA standards from victims and suspects for lab submission for evidentiary comparison.
  • Coordinates the CSA Fingerprint Program with School Resource Officers and Elementary School Administrators for the digital fingerprinting and photos of students.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Responsible experience in a police/investigations administrative support capacity.
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
