The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of Forensic Specialist to fill a vacancy in the Police Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

Under close to general supervision, Forensic Specialists perform technical crime scene investigation duties involving the identification, collection, preservation, and processing of evidence; and perform other crime scene investigation related work as required, both in the laboratory and in the field.

This is the entry level training class within the Forensic Specialist series in which incumbents learn to identify, photograph, collect, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes under the close scrutiny of the Supervisor or Senior Forensic Specialist. A Forensic Specialist may prepare court exhibits and provide expert testimony in a court of law.

  • Locate, identify, collect, protect, preserve, and analyze materials and substances as evidence at crime scenes, other locations, and from persons using a variety of techniques and specialized equipment.
  • Examine and process crime scenes such as line of duty deaths, officer involved shootings, homicides, attempted homicides, home invasions, assaults, sexual assaults, child related incidents, robberies, post blast, property crimes, and City liability incidents.
  • With case investigator's permission, interview victims, witnesses and suspects to gather information about crime scenes and to gather evidence.
  • Communicate with law enforcement personnel and other City staff, attorneys, and members of the public.
  • Document crime scenes with photographs, video recordings, diagrams, and reports.
  • Locate and record physical or trace evidence using a variety of photographic techniques.
  • Develop, lift, photograph, preserve, classify, compare and identify fingerprints, palm prints and inked prints.
  • Evaluate latent print evidence for CAL-ID computer system.
  • Conduct chemical fingerprint processing.
  • Process hazardous and drug related material for fingerprints.
  • Preserve, compare and attempt to identify evidence such as blood, hair, fibers, cloth, wood, paint and glass fragments.
  • Attend post mortem examinations; collect pathological samples and evidence for later clinical examination; photograph results of autopsy for criminal investigation and prepare photos for court presentation.
  • Collect, photograph, preserve, identify and perform basic analysis of DNA, blood, ballistics, narcotics, tool marks and other types of physical evidence.
  • Take various types of photographs of evidence, recovered property, vehicles, scene aerials, suspects, victims, prisoners, and other persons.
  • Print, enlarge and mount photographs.
  • Download and print digital photographs.
  • Prepare castings of tire, foot, hand, tool, and other types of impressions.
  • Operate a variety of cameras, video equipment, and computers in the collection and presentation of crime scene evidence.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed reports and records; prepare in-depth reports and accompanying evidence for presentation in court.
  • Reconstruct crime scenes.
  • Serve as a recognized court expert in evidence collection, photography, latent print development/recovery, diagramming, bloodstain interpretation, and projectile trajectory.
  • Provide crime scene related training to officers and other employees.
  • File, maintain, scan, and digitally reproduce photograph negatives. File, catalog, maintain, and coordinate latent print analysis by Cal-ID.
  • Transport, release, and retrieve evidence from forensic laboratories.
  • Operate City vehicles
  • Speak at community events, meetings, and training sessions.


Option I:
  • Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED) and the completion of 15 semester or 20 quarter units from an accredited college or university in criminology, administration of justice, forensic science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: One year of experience performing routine crime scene duties such as identifying, photographing, collecting, and preserving evidence and receiving, cataloging, and maintaining custody of evidence.
Option II:
  • Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
  • Experience: Two years of experience performing routine crime scene duties such as identifying, photographing, collecting, and preserving evidence and receiving, cataloging, and maintaining custody of evidence.
Option III:
  • Education: Equivalent to an Associate of Arts Degree (60 semester or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college or university in criminology, administration of justice, police science, forensic science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 320 hours of internship/volunteer experience assisting with crime scene investigation within a law enforcement agency.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, nights, and rotating shifts and be subject to recall as needed.
  • Must be willing to work an "on-call" assignment.
  • Must be able to pass an intensive police background investigation.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid, Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a concealed weapons permit (CCW).
  • Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation, medical/physical examination, and drug and alcohol test; and may be subject to polygraph examination, and/or psychological examination As part of the background investigation, all claims of education and experience made in the employment application process, as well as other information submitted, will be verified.
