The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Crime Laboratory Forensic Technician - Biology Unit shall be directly accountable to the MNPD Crime Laboratory Forensic Scientist Supervisor - Biology Unit in performing and maintaining quality control procedures and records within the unit. Incumbent may be required to work past regular hours, work extended hours, or be on call.

  • Prepares and performs quality control tests using standard laboratory equipment and chemical reagents
  • Cleans and sterilizes laboratory utensils, equipment, and facilities
  • Performs chemical and immunological tests on physical evidence
  • Interprets and evaluates serological test results
  • Collects DNA samples for training and the validation of laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Performs validations on new equipment and procedures under the direction of the technical leader
  • Prepares detailed analytical reports and communicates effectively the results of analysis
  • Conducts performance checks, recalibrations, and maintains records of laboratory equipment
  • Conducts quality control testing on reagents and supplies
  • Maintains technical forensic laboratory files and records of findings
  • Performs physical inventories of equipment and supplies
  • Provides expert testimony in court based on evidence processing and laboratory findings


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science.
  • Valid Driver License.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with laboratory information management system (LIMS)
  • Knowledge of elementary principles, practices, and techniques of biology and chemistry
  • Knowledge of laws that pertain to the collection, analyses, and preservation of physical evidence
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in forensic serology
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use and care of laboratory equipment
  • Experience with collecting and entering scientific data into databases, retrieving results, confirming agreement and writing formal reports
  • Experience with performing standard chemical and biological tests accurately and evaluating results
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
