Laboratory Technician II

Salary: $15.03 Hourly

The incumbent in this position is responsible for receiving evidence from law enforcement agencies; ensure it is stored in a manner which will preserve the evidence for testing and in a secure manner while following established quality assurance procedures. The incumbent will coordinate forensics examinations with laboratory staff and record relevant evidence data in a complex Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

  • Ensure accuracy of data, to include evidence items, names, case numbers, and all required information, entered into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Maintain security of the evidence room and ensure all policies and procedures relating to access to the secured area are followed.
  • Comply with all laboratory policies regarding evidence submissions, retention and return.
  • Keep the Laboratory Director/Assistant Laboratory Director or Quality Assurance Manager informed of issues relating to non-compliance, security, safety and LIMS.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and, assist contributors and fellow employees in matters relating to evidence and the laboratory Quality Assurance policies.
  • When requested provide training to Kansas law enforcement on the marking, sealing and submission of evidence to the laboratory.
  • Understanding of physical evidence to ensure proper storage and preservation.


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Associate degree
  • Experience in inventory control and management.
  • Experience working in a forensic laboratory.
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience.
  • Prior experience working for a law enforcement agency or in a position regularly interacting with law enforcement.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Adaptability and ability to multitask and prioritize daily activities.
  • Ability to operate office equipment, personal computers, and communication systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; read and comprehend written materials.
  • Ability to record, file and transmit information.
  • Ability to project a professional image when interacting with KBI laboratory customers and forensic scientists.
  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment process to include a polygraph examination, fingerprint based records check, and comprehensive background investigation, including reference check of past and present employers. The pre-employment process will be waived for current KBI personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements
