Forensic Technician I

Serve as a Forensic Technician I in SLED's DNA Database Department and provide a variety of technical and administrative support to forensic scientists.

Evaluate expungement requests received from Solicitors' Offices throughout the state for completeness and accuracy. Verify expungement eligibility by performing criminal history checks. Process requests according to protocol. Generate expungement notification letters to individuals granted expungements. Serve as a reviewer for requests processed by other qualified individuals.

Prepare database samples for entry into the offender information management system. Collect incomplete biometric information through contact with the submitting agency or a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check. Make requests and maintain records for database samples that need to be redrawn. Ensure proper routing and documentation of duplicate database samples. Maintain a professional level of communication; effectively interact with supervisors, departmental personnel, agency personnel and members of the law enforcement and legal community.

Perform basic departmental duties such as quality control, quality assurance, safety and other responsibilities/projects to keep the unit running at peak efficiency. Submit all required administrative paperwork in a timely manner.


Minimum and Additional Requirements:
  • Must have a High School diploma and four (4) years of relevant experience in either a laboratory setting or administrative services; or an Associate's degree and 2 years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of computers and commonly used software.
  • Must have a general knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment and terminology and the ability to operate and care for laboratory equipment.
  • Must be self-motivated and employ sound time management and organizational skills. Attention to detail is essential.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of legal terms and judicial processes preferred.
