Property & Evidence Specialist

Longview Police Department, Longview, Texas

Salary: $27,329.64 Annually

Coordinates and performs a variety of clerical and technical duties involving the processing and maintenance of Police Department property and evidence; maintains chain of custody on evidence; releases evidence to law enforcement and court personnel; retrieves and releases property to the public; maintains Property Room facilities; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties:

  • Logs-in, processes, and secures evidence and/or property held by the Police Department.
  • Enters evidence and property information into the departmental computer system.
  • Monitors and ensures evidence is properly packaged for storing.
  • Places evidence in designated storage areas.
  • Maintains chain of custody on all evidence.
  • Locates and retrieves evidence as required by detectives and other police agencies.
  • Releases evidence to the Gregg County District Attorney's (GCDA) Office as required for court.
  • Retrieves and releases property to the public as required.
  • Conducts inventory and cleans/maintains the Property Room.
  • Monitors and ensures property is easily accessible.
  • Researches old case records; identifies evidence for disposal.
  • Coordinates the disposal and/or destruction of items.
  • Answers incoming calls, performs filing, and conducts other general office duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and one year clerical support/inventory experience;
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a law enforcement property/evidence room.
  • Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Exposure to biohazards, blood borne pathogens, and firearms is involved.
