Chemist - Operational

New Mexico Department of Health, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Salary: $28,766.40 - $50,044.80 Annually

This position will perform forensic analysis of biological samples in criminal and death investigations within an American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) certified laboratory. Incumbent will perform testing for the presence of alcohol, drugs and poisons, as well as prepare legally defensible reports from Gas Chromatography (GC) & Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy Mass Spectroscopy (LCMSMS) and computer reports. This position will be responsible to provide factual and/or expert testimony in a court of law when needed.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field, and two (2) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting.
  • Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
  • Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards.
  • Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer.
  • There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized.
  • Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high pressure gas cylinders.
  • Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
  • In-State and Out-of-Sate travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
