The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is accepting applications to fill a Forensic Scientist position in the Latent Print Section in Topeka, KS. This position will be filled based on the candidate's successful level of experience.

Duties:

Forensic Scientist I:
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: training in the area of latent print examination by means of an intensive two-year training program to include analysis of latent print evidence, comparison and evaluation of latent prints and known prints, physical and chemical development, report writing and court testimony.
Forensic Scientist II:
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: performing analysis of latent print evidence; comparison and evaluation of latent prints to known prints; physical and chemical development; conducts searches of prints through the Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS); documents evidence and write reports of results; testifies as an expert witness in a court of law; provides training and presentations to outside agencies and organizations.
Forensic Scientist III:
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: performing analysis of latent print evidence; comparison and evaluation of latent prints to known prints; physical and chemical development; completes searches of prints through the Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS); documents evidence and writes reports of results; conducts technical reviews and verifications; testifies as an expert witness in a court of law; provides training and presentations to outside agencies and organizations. Reviews technical procedures and provides assistance with audits.

Requirements:

Forensic Scientist I: Hourly Compensation Rate: $22.16
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field.
Forensic Scientist II: Hourly Compensation Rate: $26.98
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work and two (2) years relevant work experience. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field.
    • Experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in latent print case work.
    • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic science laboratory.
Forensic Scientist III: Hourly Compensation Rate: $32.78
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work and three (3) years relevant work experience. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field.
    • Master’s degree (MS) in Forensic Science.
    • Three (3) years of experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in latent print case work.
    • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic science laboratory.
    • Experience testifying in a court of law as a Latent Print Examiner.
    • Certified Latent Print Examiner with the International Association for Identification (IAI).
TRAVEL
  • The position is expected to travel to the locations required to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Occasional in-state and limited out-of-state travel may be required. The incumbent in this position is required to have a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment process to include a polygraph examination, fingerprint based records check, and comprehensive background investigation, including reference check of past and present employers. The pre-employment process will be waived for current KBI personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
