Police Property and Evidence Technician

Maricopa Police Department, Maricopa, Arizona

Salary: $39,746.00 - $57,234.00 Annually

Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks associated with the identification, collection, receipt, preservation and release of crime scene evidence in support of law enforcement activities.

  • Receives, packages, preserves, logs, stores, and inventories property and evidence to include impounded property and evidence from police officers, such as narcotics, firearms, currency, etc.
  • Responds to crime scenes at the request of the Criminal Investigations Unit to assist in collection, documentation, and storage of evidence.
  • Transport firearms and ammunition to the lab for analysis through the NIBIN system.
  • Review criminal history checks to determine appropriate release of firearms.
  • Label evidence and enter information into computerized system for inventory control, maintain files on all inventoried property.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding property dispositions via telephone.
  • Locate property owners by searching relevant computer systems and identifying items using serial numbers and other descriptive features.
  • Prepare reports of tasks performed, examinations conducted and documentation assembled.
  • Perform various routine clerical duties to maintain property and evidence.
  • May assist in discovery process and testify in court regarding the integrity of property storage and the preservation of evidence.


Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of related work experience, such as inventory control, reconciliation,warehouse experience., or related government experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
  • Experience working in a law enforcement agency.
Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of (or ability to obtain within one (1) month of hire) a standard driver license
  • Must possess or obtain within four (4) months of hire, an Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) Terminal Operator certification (TOC).
  • This position may be subject to call-out.City of Maricopa residency is preferred to minimize incident response time.

  • Principles of record keeping for inventory, property, and evidence

  • Use of software systems /databases at an entry level

  • Operate a personal computer using a variety of database and software systems.

  • Follow oral and written instructions
