The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill vacant Fingerprint Specialist III positions, grade P-19, in the Forensic Science Division.

This is highly technical and lead/coordinative work in the field of Forensic Science, using appropriate protocols to analyze friction ridge evidence. Work includes, but is not limited to, applying the most current scientific methodology for friction ridge examination, and utilizing field specific tools to assist with the process. The incumbent prepares a summary of findings and materials for use in testifying as a Subject Matter Expert in criminal trial cases, which can be controversial and highly important to the prosecution and/or defense. This position assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Lab Manager in his/her absence.

Selected candidates provide expert testimony in civil and criminal proceedings in State and Federal Court cases; provide training to subordinate fingerprint personnel in techniques and methodology of latent print examination; analyze and compares latent finger and palm impressions from crime scenes with inked impressions or live scans of known criminals; ensure ten-prints are correct prior to entering them into the computer database; search fingerprint files for possible suspects developed from computer print-outs of alias or duplicate cards; prepare photographic enlargement of fingerprints, palm prints, etc., for exhibit presentation; and maintain a current working knowledge of proper handling, care and presentation of fingerprint evidence. Must be familiar with the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors - Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 requirements, as it pertains to latent print examination in compliance with Accredited and Licensed Lab.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must possess a High School diploma or equivalent (GED), and completion of advanced technical or college level coursework or training equivalent to Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) latent print school; plus three (3) years of experience involving latent identification. The applicant must be able to provide expert testimony in a Court of Law as an expert in latent print examination. EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION, WHICH CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.
  • Six (6) years of experience as a full performance latent print examiner.
  • Certified as a subject matter expert in latent print examination.
  • Experience training personnel in latent print examination.
  • Experience with ASCLD/LAB ISO 17025 requirements as they pertain to latent print examination, mandated by the State of Maryland.
  • International Association of Identification (IAI) Certified in Latent Print Examination.
  • May be assigned shift work (days/evenings/weekends/holidays).
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • This is an essential position. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when other County employees are granted administrative leave.
