Salary: $44,688.42 - $63,143.57 Annually

To provide lead direction and participate or to perform specialized duties on an assigned shift related to the receiving, storing, disposing, and maintaining of property, evidence and supplies held by the Police Department.

Positions assigned to the class of Senior Property Assistant are expected to perform lead responsibilities for other Property Assistants, as well as participate in property related duties on an assigned shift. Positions in this class are distinguished from those in the Property Assistant class by the specialized skills, and experience.

  • Lead and participate in the receipt and security of incoming evidence and property acquired by the Police Department for safekeeping and custody.
  • Train, instruct, and direct the work of Property Assistants assigned to shift.
  • Assist in demonstrating to Property Assistants safe work procedures and methods related to storage and transportation of property, evidence, and supplies.
  • Repair and maintain police safety and technical investigation equipment.
  • Perform property disposition tasks in accordance with laws and departmental procedures.
  • Inventory booked property and review booking reports for errors.
  • Assist in destruction of narcotics and weapons.
  • Requisition, receive, store, and issue departmental supplies.
  • Perform related work as assigned.


Knowledge of:
  • Modern office methods and procedures.
  • Common tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Criminal laws pertaining to evidence.
  • Record keeping necessary to provide chain-of-evidence.
  • Federal and State laws pertaining to disposal of property.
  • Computer terminal operations related to the entry and retrieval of information pertaining to property and evidence.
  • Operation of storeroom and warehouse facilities in a safe and secure manner.
  • Inventory record keeping.
  • General courtesy in dealing with co-workers and public.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Safety equipment and its proper handling and maintenance.
Ability to: Testify in court.
  • Train, instruct, and assist others in the storage, safekeeping, and transportation of property.
  • Repair and maintain police safety equipment.
  • Interpret and apply laws, ordinances, and departmental policies relating to evidence and property.
  • Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Perform simple arithmetic and calculations.
  • Lift, move, and store property and supplies.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Operate required office and warehouse equipment.
  • Keep complete and accurate records of items received, stored, and issued.
  • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with employees, City departments, governmental agencies, and the general public.
  • Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one year of experience comparable to that of a Property Assistant in the City of Sacramento.
Special Qualification:
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required for appointment to this classification, and must be maintained in order to continue employment in the classification.
