Property Room Technician

Stearns County Sheriff's Office, St. Cloud, Minnesota

Salary: $17.91 - $26.29 per hour

Position Objective: To provide a safe, secure and orderly property room within the Sheriff's Office. This position is responsible for receiving, recording, processing, preserving and returning or disposing of property and evidence taken into custody by Deputies and Department personnel in accordance with applicable statutes and policies in order to maintain the integrity of the evidence.

  • Collects, receipts, logs and classifies all evidence; preserves evidence related to various cases and returns and/or disposes of property according to established policies and procedures.
  • Conducts audits of the property room as directed and periodic inventories of property related to specific cases.
  • Assists deputies on search warrants and crime scenes by receipting and logging evidence.
  • Assists deputies with proper packaging and preservation of evidentiary items as needed.
  • Enters and records evidence items into various tracking and records management systems.
  • Files and copies documents, records, order supplies and works with the various prosecutors' offices for evidence viewing, disclosure and evidence preparation for court.
  • Provides testimony in court as necessary regarding the integrity and proper storage, preservations and transportation of evidence.
  • Transports or makes arrangements for delivery of evidence to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension located in different facilities, including St. Cloud Police Department, St. Paul, Minnesota and other locations.
  • Provides instruction and training to staff members on the proper collection, packaging and preservation of evidentiary items.
  • Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
  • Performs others duties as assigned or apparent.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School graduate or equivalent, one year of post-secondary education and two years of progressively related experience in a criminal justice related clerical/administrative support position OR High School graduate or equivalent and four years of progressively related experience in a criminal justice related clerical/administrative support position; must have a valid MN Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; and experience with Microsoft Office Suite systems.
  • Preferred Experience Beyond Minimum Qualifications: An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Studies, Forensic Science or related field; experience with inventory control, data tracking and records management; providing training and direction on department policies and processes.

  • Knowledge of best practices in the area of evidence retention and property room management.
  • Knowledge of Office policies, procedures, principles and practices.
  • Ability to develop, implement and maintain a process for the intake and retention of evidence in the property room.
  • Ability to work with Sheriff's Office personnel and personnel from other agencies.
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and resolve challenges.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 100% of the time indoors.
  • May require occasional travel to off-site locations.
  • Will have minimal exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a low level of physical effort.
  • Ability to move up to 50 pounds.

  • Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lieutenant – Investigations.
