What does the job do?
  • Forensic Scientists serve as specialists in an area of expertise/scientific discipline and are responsible for identifying and analyzing physical evidence related to their specialization that is collected from criminal investigations.
    • Forensic Scientists in the Department of Public Safety support the New Mexico law enforcement community in the investigation of crimes by receiving and maintaining physical evidence custody;
    • preparing reports that document their findings;
    • provide expert opinions in their scientific specialization to investigators;
    • and provide expert witness testimony regarding their findings in a court of law.
  • The incumbent will be provided on-the-job training related to performing analysis of controlled substance evidence; with the intended goal of providing enough training and tenure to perform independently as a case-working Chemistry Analyst. Upon successful completion of all training, and demonstrated and sustained competent performance, the incumbent will be responsible for independently collecting, classifying, identifying and analyzing controlled substance evidence related to criminal investigations.
How does the job get done?
  • This position is responsible for producing formal reports that accurately identify and analyze physical evidence to determine their significance to the investigation.
  • This position is responsible for presenting the results, conclusions and expert opinion in the scientific analysis of the controlled substance evidence.
  • This position will provide expert witness testimony regarding their findings in courts of law throughout the State of New Mexico.
  • This position will perform Quality Assurance/Quality Control to assure quality analysis, evidence integrity, and maintain accreditation standards.
  • This position will continue training to develop competency and proficiency in their area of specialization, specifically chemical analysis for this position, as required.

The Ideal Candidate will have experience:
  • Determining the identity of an unknown substance
  • Conducting tests to measure concentrations of controlled substances
  • Providing testimony in a court of law
  • Writing laboratory reports
  • Retrieving, analyzing, and comparing unknown substances
  • The Ideal Candidate will also have at least twenty (20) hours of college-level chemistry coursework.
Minimum Qualifications for DNA and Chemistry Forensic Scientists:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Forensic Science or Molecular Biology
Employment Requirements:
  • Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and random employment drug testing. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
