Property & Evidence Specialist II

National City Police Department, National City, California

Salary: $47,677.80 - $57,951.96 Annually

Under general supervision, to maintain custody and control of all confiscated, found, and other property and evidence for the Police Department; and perform technical tasks which may include photography, processing of evidence, and the collection, identification, and preservation of evidence at crime scenes.

  • Receives, records, classifies, and stores property and evidence in the custody of the National City Police Department.
  • Maintains chain of custody records.
  • Assists in the lawful disposal of property and evidence.
  • Performs technical work related to the collection of evidence.
  • Identifies, collects, documents, and preserves physical evidence at major crime scenes.
  • Processes evidence for latent prints and/or DNA.
  • Prepares crime scene diagrams.
  • Prepares evidence for court and testifies in court.
  • Transport evidence to allied agencies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent;
  • AND
  • A degree or certificate in the field of evidence technology or related field;
  • AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in a law enforcement agency.
Knowledge and Skills in:
  • Proper methods to search, identify, collect, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes and to maintain chain of custody and security of evidence; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; principles and procedures of stock control systems and recordkeeping; codes and laws governing property and evidence storage, release, and disposal.
Ability to:
  • Input and retrieve data using a CRT; type at a net speed of 30 words per minute; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a clear, concise manner; work cooperatively and effectively with others; offer testimony as an expert witness regarding evidentiary materials and findings; learn and apply regulations and requirements related to law enforcement property and evidence; perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
License and Special Requirement:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.
  • Must meet standards of integrity and trustworthiness required for law enforcement-related activities.
