Duties

  • The Deputy Coroner position serves as a liaison between the Coroner, law enforcement and the crime lab, focusing on examining the remains of a body in order to determine both how and why a death occurred, to include but not limited to identification of the body, photographing the crime scene, notification of the next of kin and transportation of the body to the crime lab.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Preferred: Bachelor's or master's degree in anthropology, criminal justice, or forensic anthropology
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • A minimum of one year work experience in death scene investigation
  • Required: At least 300 hours of death scene experience
  • Must have the ability to complete and pass the Georgia Basic Coroners Course
  • Must have the ability to obtain certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI)
  • Must have the ability to work routinely under highly stressful conditions including life threatening situations
  • Must have the ability to prepare legal documents such as affidavits and subpoenas
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with employees and managers at all levels of the origination
  • Must have the ability to use and operate cameras and video equipment
  • Must be computer literate, with proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Must have and maintain a valid United States Driver's License (Class C), a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Employment is contingent on passing a mandatory Physical/Drug Screen/MVR and Background Investigation.
