Evidence Technician

Salary: $18.40 per hour

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Drafts and prepares correspondence with regards to evidence collection, preservation, and storage.
  • Assists with budget preparation; prepares requisitions and receiving reports.
  • Maintains evidence records.
  • Assists in the developing presentations, educational props, and materials.
  • Makes appointments; maintains various department files (photos/audio/video).
  • Orders office supplies and other materials.
  • Assists in the training of evidence technicians.
  • Assists with citizen inquiries and resolving issues.
  • Receives and handles calls in regard to evidence status. Relays communication between police dept., crime lab, prosecutor’s office and defense attorneys.
  • Assists in seeking grants within the forensics science discipline.
  • Organizes, assigns, and stores evidence into evidence vault locations; maintains chain of custody for all evidence/found property; transports evidence to and from crime lab.
  • Performs criminal history investigations for eligibility to release certain evidence.
  • Processes, preserves, and maintains evidence records (audio, video, & photos).
  • Testifies in criminal court cases with regards to evidence collection, processing and chain of custody.
  • Coordinates the destruction and dissemination of evidence once a court case is disposed of.
  • Respond to crime scenes to document, process and collect evidence.
  • Attend autopsies, document the process, and collect evidence.
  • Attend training and continuing education in regards to crime scene processing, evidence documentation and collection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and equipment, including bar coding.
  • Knowledge of statutes pertaining to the release of open and closed records.
  • Knowledge of the Missouri State Highway Patrol crime lab functions and operations pertaining to the handling of evidence.
  • Skill in the use of computers and various audio/video/photo software programs.
  • Skill in the maintenance of confidential records and reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • No felony convictions.
Before final appointment, successful applicant will be required to successfully complete a drug test, background investigation, and pre-employment physical.
