Forensic Technician I - Toxicology

South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, Columbia, South Carolina

Salary: $35,000.00 Annually

To perform level I analysis for the cases submitted to the Toxicology Department. To provide administrative and technical support to the Forensic Scientists in the State Law Enforcement Division's Toxicology Department.

Duties

Specific Responsibilities
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of reagents, supplies, instruments, evidence and certificates of analysis.
  • Proficiently perform basic toxicological measurements to include blood volatiles and drug screen analysis (level I analysis). Able to effectively testify to the analytical methods and quality control measures required for analysis. Maintain associated instrument logs and records.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and reagents.
  • Assist with safety checks and record keeping throughout the laboratory.
  • Assist Forensic Scientists in the preparation and accountability of evidence by performing inventory and photo documentation of evidence.
  • Assist with transport of evidence between the department and Evidence Control.
  • Assist with laboratory housekeeping duties such as biohazardous waste and cleaning of glassware.
  • Maintain professionalism and contribute effectively to team analysis process and atmosphere.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a related applied science.
  • Knowledge of the special precautions required to handle and package biohazardous materials is necessary.
  • Must be able to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Must possess accurate typing and computer skills, and effective communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to lift items of evidence up to 25 pounds.
  • Position may require some overnight travel for court or training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory practices
  • Working knowledge of computerized information systems/Microsoft Office suite.
