Crime Scene Technician

Lufkin Police Department, Lufkin, Texas

Salary: $19.28 per hour

Performs various forensic and technical investigative tasks involving the identification, collection, preservation, packaging, and analysis of evidence at crime scenes. Other duties include recovering, comparing and identifying trace evidence and fingerprints.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Respond to Crime Scenes when requested.
  • Collect, preserve and maintain chain of custody of all evidence.
  • Ensure Property Room and storage areas are safe and secure.
  • Check in, categorize and store evidence daily.
  • Testify in court, presenting evidence and/or chain of custody.
  • Photograph scenes and evidence.
  • Collect and process evidence for DNA.
  • Deliver and pick up evidence from Crime Labs.
  • Research cases and dispose of evidence according to the law and statute.
  • Prepare necessary written reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must be able to respond to call outs outside normal working hours.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations for the collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Ability to testify in court as an expert witness.
  • Basic photography skills.
  • Good communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Basic proficiencies in operating computers and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments.
