Evidence Technician

Delaware County Medical Examiner/Coroner, Lima, Pennsylvania

Salary: $39,507.00 Annually

The Evidence Technician plays a critical role in the accurate collection, storage, and preservation of evidence for criminal investigations. They work closely with law enforcement officials, crime scene investigators, and forensic scientists to ensure that all evidence is properly identified, collected, and stored in a secure manner.

Duties

Essential Duties
  • Properly store and catalog evidence in secure facilities, ensuring compliance with regulations and protocols. Implement and maintain an organized system for easy retrieval and tracking.
  • Record any movement of evidence released to responsible parties and track the location of such evidence.
  • Routinely audit the evidence inventory and updates status as needed.
  • Retrieve evidence with a Return of Property Order as requested.
  • Follow destruction policies established by the Medical Examiners Office.
  • Coordinate with proper authorities when firearm and drug destruction is necessary.
  • Testify in court when necessary.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Qualifications
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of prior experience in the criminal justice system.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent organizational skills are necessary to manage and track evidence effectively.
  • The ability to handle requests and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • The Technician must have the ability to maintain confidential information and handle sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work seamlessly as part of a team.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, forensic science, or a related field.
  • Proven working experience as an Evidence Technician or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of evidence handling and chain of custody procedures.
  • Familiarity with forensic investigation methods and techniques.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Proficient in using specialized software and technology for evidence management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Computer Skills
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software applications, including inventory management systems and database software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this position, he employee is frequently required to:
  • Stand for a prolonged period and engage in frequent bending, twisting / rotating at the waist, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Walk for prolonged periods of time delivering evidentiary material.
  • Lift and/or move evidence storage bins and file folder boxes/materials with a weight over a hundred (100) lbs. varied distances.
  • Carry evidence storage bins and file folder boxes/materials with a weight over fifty (50) lbs. varied distances.
  • Work under adverse and extremely unpleasant conditions such as abnormal sight, sounds, taste, and odors.
  • Occasionally working with machinery (using specialized equipment)
  • Occasionally climb over five (5) stairs, ladders over six (6) feet, sitting for prolonged periods of time and engage in typing, reading, reaching, talking, listening, and interacting with law enforcement.
  • As needed push and/or move evidence storage bins and file folder boxes/materials with a weight over two hundred (200) lbs. varied distances.
Work Environment
  • The Evidence Technician will predominantly work in an office setting.
Other
  • Demonstrating reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to upholding ethical standards in handling evidence.
  • May require use of a private vehicle.
  • There will be a need to work extended hours.
