Duties

Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Evaluate the quality of latent prints submitted and developed from a crime scene to determine if they are of sufficient value for comparison and determine if the latent print qualifies for entry into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
  • Enters data into AFIS to include the examiner utilizing their technical skills involving the manual markup, counting, and zoning minutiae.
  • Retrieves and screens a list of candidate images from AFIS.
  • Analyzes, compares, and identifies latent fingerprint evidence, and processes cases with known and unknown subject information.
  • Performs side-by-side comparison utilizing magnifying glasses or computer programs. Makes a final determination as to the identification or exclusion of a subject to latent prints.
  • Establishes, verifies, or excludes identifications by examining the ridge detail in the latent prints while comparing it to the ridge detail present in the known prints.
  • Maintains chain of custody for evidence received.
  • Establishes and maintains a database of unsolved latent prints using the AFIS
  • Prepares reports detailing latent print comparison findings; verifies co-workers' casework and conclusions as required. Provides information to interdepartmental representatives and local and State law enforcement agencies.
  • Documents all investigative information; prepares detailed case reports and records; enters/uploads information into department databases. Verifies accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Participates in court activities, prepares cases for prosecution; testifies in judicial proceedings regarding findings and procedures used in evidence collection and processing.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Prefer a college degree in the associated field and two (2) years of experience of full-time, uninterrupted, progressively responsible experience performing latent print comparisons. Active certification(s) in crime scene procedures and others deemed necessary by the Police Department is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Special Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of fingerprint classification, search, and filing methods. Latent print comparison and identification.
  • Working knowledge of methods of identification, interpretation, and preservation of evidence.
  • Photographic processes.
  • Basic principles and techniques utilized in the classification of fingerprints under the Henry
  • Evidence handling
  • Courtroom
  • Automated computerized fingerprint systems such as Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS)
Required Certificates/Licenses:
  • Possess or obtain within three (3) years P.O.S.T. Latent Print Examiner Certification. Possess or obtain within five (5) years International Association for Identification Latent Print Examiner Certification.
