Salary:

Crime Scene Specialist I:
  • Pay Range: $21.02 to $32.62 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $21.02 to $24.34 per hour.
Crime Scene Specialist II:
  • Pay Range: $24.34 to $37.76 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $24.34 to $31.06 per hour.

Crime Scene Specialist II - Phoenix Police Laboratory Bureau Department (Opportunity to Underfill as a Crime Scene Specialist I). Individuals that do not meet the minimum qualifications below for the Crime Scene Specialist II may qualify for the opportunity to Underfill at the Crime Scene Specialist I level.

The Laboratory Bureau seeks a qualified candidate to fill a Crime Scene Specialist II position. This position works on more serious and complex crime scenes (e.g. homicides, officer involved shootings, death investigations, aggravated assaults, etc.) requiring a great amount of technical skills and expertise. Duties include supporting sworn personnel by photographing, analyzing, processing, and collecting physical evidence. Work is completed primarily in the field at crime scenes. Shift, weekend, and holiday work is required.

  • Evidence collection and processing using various technical equipment, materials, and processes.

Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - CRIME SCENE SPECIALIST II:
  • Analyzes, collects, preserves, and presents biological evidence, latent fingerprints, tire prints, firearms, shoe prints, tool marks, and other physical evidence;
  • Photographs evidence at crime scenes;
  • Processes evidence in the field or laboratory using special powders, chemical solutions, forensic light sources, and various cameras, lenses, and filters in order to develop and preserve evidence;
  • Attends autopsies to photograph injuries and fingerprint the deceased for identification purposes;
  • Testifies in court as a witness in connection to the scenes processed and evidence developed and preserved;
  • Writes departmental reports and supplements;
  • Accepts, documents, and bar-codes evidence;
  • Maintains proper chain of custody on evidence and proper packaging;
  • Participates in a structured training program, to include mentoring new employees;
  • Inputs data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device;
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Crime Scene Specialist I Minimum Qualifications:
  • One year of experience in crime scene processing or photography, or an associate's degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work may be substituted.
Crime Scene Specialist II Minimum Qualifications:
  • One year of experience in crime scene processing and photography.
  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work may be substituted.
For all classifications:
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Perform job duties in conditions which include decomposing bodies, strong odors, insects, hostility, emotionally charged situations, child, and animal victims.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
