Under supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in the receipt of forensic evidence and associated information. Receives evidence and enters data using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Maintains proper chain of custody of evidence. May provide administrative support to the lab.

Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Receive evidence from law enforcement officers, forensic specialist, or other sources, ensuring accurate documentation of each item received.
  • Maintain the chain of custody by carefully logging every transfer or movement of evidence.
  • Ensure the security and integrity of evidence by following established protocols for handling, packaging and storing items to prevent contamination, loss or damage.
  • Properly label each piece of evidence with unique identifiers and relevant case information to facilitate tracking and retrieval during investigations and court proceedings.
  • Adhere to standardized procedures and protocols for handling different types of evidence.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of a high school diploma OR GED
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
  • Current GBI employees
  • Relevant experience involving the receipt and handling of physical evidence in a law enforcement environment.
  • Experience related to property/inventory control.
  • Two (2) years of general office work experience, which included direct customer support and data entry experience.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Successful completion of coursework in the field of natural science or logistics coursework from an accredited college or university. Applicants must provide proof of these courses by submitting a transcript(s).
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; reach, carry with hands and arms; stoop and kneel. Frequent light lifting and/or moving 10lbs. of evidence or supplies unassisted is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The position requires the incumbent to work in a office/laboratory setting which includes shared office space with other Crime Lab personnel. The position may be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the laboratory to include lab coat, gloves, face mask and protective eye wear. PPE will be provided.
