Evidence Technician II

Pima County Sheriff's Department, Tucson, Arizona

Salary: $22.16 - $29.92 Hourly

Receives, collects, preserves, stores, releases, and maintains chain-of-custody of property and evidence collected or received from deputies, detectives, or technicians. Work may be required on weekends and holidays. This classification is a senior-level evidence technician in the Sheriff’s Department.

Duties

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Safely and correctly handles, receives, labels, tags, packages, logs, catalogs, retrieves, and releases evidence and other stored property submitted to the Sheriff’s Department Evidence Unit;
  • Ensures the proper chain of custody is maintained and documented for all items submitted for storage;
  • Packages and prepares evidence for shipment to owners or for analysis;
  • Adheres to quality control and quality assurance procedures;
  • Disposes of property and evidence by release, sale, or destruction after adjudication and maintains records of disposal;
  • Photographs property prior to release or destruction and completes associated paperwork;
  • Checks items received against information available on multi-agency computer information system for registered owner information;
  • Takes custody of and secures seized vehicles;
  • Testifies in court as to chain-of-custody for property and evidence;
  • Travels to departmental substations, crime scenes, and laboratories to take custody and transport items of evidence;
  • May instruct at training academies and engage with the community at various functions.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years of experience as an inventory control clerk in a law enforcement setting. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • OR:
  • One year of experience with Pima County as an Evidence Technician I.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current Pima County Sheriff's Department employee with experience working in the Pima County Sheriff's Department Property and Evidence Unit.
