Cybersecurity Intern

Salary: $15.00 Hourly

The cybersecurity internship is designed to provide exposure to a variety of security tasks that one should expect a junior or entry-level security analyst to perform. These include Cybersecurity audit and assessment remediation, virus/malware remediation, and general cyber related tasks that may be dictated by the Information Security Manager (ISM). The Cybersecurity intern will support the development of the Roanoke County Cybersecurity program by identifying and managing cyber risks, create threat/risk assessments and help develop Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M) documentation and System Security Plans (SSPs). The intern will work with the Cybersecurity Operations Engineer and Information Security Manager to learn about and act on cybersecurity risks, threat intelligence, threat vectors, vulnerabilities, vulnerability management, security awareness, incident response, and phishing. The intern will have active mentoring and hands-on training with cybersecurity experts and develop real-world experience to address cybersecurity challenges.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in monitoring and investigating of the Roanoke County I.T. infrastructure and cybersecurity systems i.e. SIEM, EPP, Firewalls, Network monitoring, anti-malware, intrusion detection, etc. for cyber-attacks, develop TTPs/Indicators of Compromise.
  • Work with the Cybersecurity team in vulnerability assessments for specific applications, services, networks and servers as required.
  • Assist the Cybersecurity Operations team to review and track vulnerabilities identified.
  • Help the Cybersecurity Operations team to respond to cybersecurity events.
  • Work hand in hand with the Cybersecurity team on various projects: cybersecurity, forensic analysis, audits, risk assessments and penetration tests, etc.
  • Review and analyze possible new cybersecurity applications/tools for purchase and future deployment.
  • Work with the Cybersecurity team in performing compliance audits against enterprise security controls.
  • Help create runbooks, playbooks, security guidelines, and procedures.
  • Review, gather and create documentation and metrics for different areas of the security stack.
  • Assist in research on cybersecurity topics relevant to cybersecurity and similar industry threats.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Education:
  • Required: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Pursing an associate or bachelor’s degree.
  • Preferred: Currently enrolled and taking classes in a Cybersecurity degree program.
Experience:
  • Required: None
  • Preferred: At least one-year related experience and/or training in Cybersecurity.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Eager to learn new technology, process and procedures integrating existing skills within the Roanoke County Cybersecurity mission.
  • Organized and able to maintain several projects at one time
  • Possess a desire to immerse yourself in Cybersecurity problem solving to secure Roanoke County’s I.T. Enterprise and sensitive information.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, including preparing correspondence, written reports, and briefs, comfortable with technical writing, as well as public speaking
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, taking initiative to solve complex problems
  • Knowledge of the use and application of the Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of Cybersecurity
  • Ability to analyze information using different tools and applications
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and staff.
Additional Requirements:
  • Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results.
  • Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
