Duties

Examples of Work
  • Develops and approves new methods and techniques used in the examination of evidence.
  • Prepares briefs of analyses of evidence; testifies as an expert witness in state and federal courts and gives depositions.
  • Coordinates the photography of physical evidence at crime scenes and/or evidence received in the laboratory.
  • Supervises the chemical analysis of unknown materials for identification.
  • Oversees the collecting, receiving, analyzing and preserving of evidence at crime scenes and in the laboratory.
  • Ensures that analysts process evidence for latent fingerprints correctly.
  • Provides training for law enforcement agencies and universities.
  • Coordinates the research and evaluation of new instrumentation as to its feasibility and application to forensic work.
  • Evaluates methods used by the laboratory and recommends new or modified analytical procedures, software and/or equipment; halts production if necessary.
  • Provides recommendations on changes to policies, procedures, and regulations for the work unit.
  • Supervises deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analyses on biological specimens and ensures that valid conclusions are drawn from scientific analysis.
  • Reviews courtroom testimony in accordance with federal standards and laboratory accreditation requirements according to laboratory policy.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A baccalaureate degree with twelve semester hours in biology or chemistry and an additional twelve semester hours in a biological science, chemistry, forensic science, molecular physics, physics, criminalistics or pharmacology plus four years of professional level crime laboratory experience.
  • A combination of coursework is allowed.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
  • Graduate training in qualifying fields will substitute for one year of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience; a combination of coursework is allowed.
NOTE:
  • Applicants must meet the current educational requirements of the hiring agency’s accrediting body for the laboratory.
  • Criminal justice is not considered a qualifying educational field.
  • Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
