Forensic Scientist (Forensic Biology/DNA)

Onondaga County Center for Forensic Sciences, Syracuse, New York

Salary: $67,048- $90,340 per year

The work involves responsibility for collecting evidence, performing scientific testing and analyses of unknown biological substances/DNA and evidentiary material required in criminal investigations, preparation and presentation of findings in notes and written reports, serving as an expert witness in court, performing technical review of casework and performing quality control and quality assurance related tasks. All work is performed in accordance with Federal and State accreditation requirements and departmental procedure manuals and guidelines.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees within the last ten (10) years with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field which must include or be supplemented by a minimum of nine(9) semester or equivalent hours of coursework (graduate/undergraduate) covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, in addition course work in statistics and/or population genetics must be completed for the Forensic Scientist I position
  • AND,
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist II position
  • OR
  • Five (5) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist III position
  • NOTE: Education may be substituted for experience as follows: A Master’s Degree or a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field can be substituted for one (1) year of the required work experience for the Forensic Scientist III position.
