Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical tasks associated with the tracking, handling, and safekeeping of evidence and found property within County law enforcement agencies.

Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Receives property and evidence from law enforcement officers; documents receipt of items; maintains the chain of possession from intake to final disposition.
  • Stores and safeguards property and evidence, including seized, recovered, and found property; enters and updates data into computer system; mails and transports evidence to crime laboratory for testing; releases items to authorized parties, documents return of evidence to custody; verifies completeness of reports and case documentation.
  • Documents all handling of evidence and property; generates computerized reports of movement and handling of department evidence; maintains activity logs and generates reports, as needed.
  • Conducts regular inventory of evidence room and property.
  • Maintain and updates a variety of files, records, logs, reports and documents
  • Assist with the transportation of evidence from crime scenes, as needed.
  • Upon notification of judicial order of case closure, destroys or disposes of evidence and property, or returns to owner.
  • Updates and maintains procedures for the custody and handling of evidence.
  • Prepares necessary documentation and evidence for court; may be required to testify in court.
  • Supervises the Equipment Service Worker who is responsible for basic servicing of Sheriff's office vehicles; purchasing gear and equipment (Sheriff's Department Only)

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Training and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED certificate
  • 2 years college/university level coursework in the area of Criminal Justice ; or
  • 1 year of experience, in any capacity, with a law enforcement agency in the State of CA.
  • Valid State of CA driver's license
  • Pass a thorough background investigation
  • Experience in inventory control or warehouse work is highly desirable
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; climb stairs ability to stoop, kneel, and bend over; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds independently or 100 pounds with assistance; must be able to climb a ladder and retrieve items from upper shelves in a warehouse environment, may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and infectious disease during identification and handling of evidence/property., corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work is performed in office and evidence room environments. Exposure to hazardous materials, liquid chemicals, and blood borne pathogens.
