Duties

Responsibilities and Qualification
  • An employee in this class spends a minimum of 75% of their time photographing postmortem and antemortem tissues, fluids, gross specimens and other related evidence at autopsies, crime scenes and in various toxic environments including contained spaces and high altitudes such as aerial aircraft or scaffolding.
  • The remainder of their time is spent performing other related duties and responsibilities that include processing of digital images while maintaining proper chain of custody and handling of all digital media ensuring later acceptance for court purposes.
  • The employee also serves as instructor and consultant to Medical Examiners, police personnel, student interns and other criminal justice/medical officials in the use of photographic equipment and digital processing in a forensic medical setting.
  • Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work for technical quality and achievement of desired goals and objectives.
  • Backup images and photographs to various repositories.
  • Maintain radiographic image archive and distribute across individual cases.
  • Provide digital images to police, courts and other necessary parties.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Associate or bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in forensic imaging, photography or film studies is preferred.
  • Two-years of education and/or experience in photography with proficiency in the use of digital cameras, including routine troubleshooting and maintenance on processing and printing equipment.
  • Knowledge of crime scene photography including principles of in-situ cadaver and physical evidence photography, lighting techniques under various ambient light and weather conditions, composition, design, processing, and equipment use and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of special techniques including alternate light sources.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and policies as it relates to photo processing, evidence, preservation of chain of custody, and record keeping procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions precisely.
  • Ability and willingness to work with cadavers.
  • Ability to photograph various types of evidence for 1-1 enlargements.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to lift and move cadavers and other heavy items such as boxes and materials.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer with specialized software programs to restore, edit, enhance, secure, and log photographic images, and use photographic or x-ray equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance of equipment.
