Crime Scene NIBIN Specialist

Assist Crime Scene Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians during criminal investigations of crime scenes involving firearms, casings, projectiles, or any other firearm related evidence that may assist courts with judicial proceedings within the guidelines of the Criminal Code of Georgia, federal statutory law, procedural laws, department directives, standard operating procedures, and county ordinances. Reports to Lieutenant or other designated person, and works with the general public, commercial business representatives, judges, attorneys, health care representatives, co-workers, suspects, persons involved in and convicted of criminal acts, and law enforcement representatives from federal, state, and local agencies to provide law enforcement support.

Duties

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Examining/Inspecting firearms received from criminal cases and conducting research/data entry on the firearm.
  • Conducting firearm test fires on criminal cases to provide casings for NIBIN entry.
  • Coordinating and conducting NIBIN Submission, acquisition, and correlations for casings from criminal cases.
  • Performing NIBIN submission/acquisition/correlation paperwork and triaging casings for NIBIN entry.
  • Completing detailed reports on the work performed.
  • Receiving, reviewing, and completing all NIBIN leads that are received.
  • Assists in the investigation of assigned cases to determine the circumstances of criminal activities and evidence validity.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of the work areas and assist other Crime Scene NIBIN Specialist tasks related to pending cases and work flow.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
  • Documenting firearms, casings, projectiles, or any other firearm related evidence through written reports, photographs, NIBIN data entry.
  • Process evidence by applying scientific methods and techniques from training and experience.
  • Prepare for trial and testify as an expert witness.
  • Conduct research on firearms through ATF E-Trace and GCIC/NCIC.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Crime Scene, Firearms, Law Enforcement, and/or Forensic experience in an educational/ hands-on environment through internships or previous work experiences.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • General knowledge of federal and state laws, penal codes, constitutional guidelines, local ordinances, and departmental policies/procedures, county geographical area, criminal investigation methods, judicial processes and proceedings, and crime scene processing methods used to collect and preserve evidence specifically related to firearms and firearm evidence.
  • Familiarity with computer programs to include Word, Excel, etc.
  • Familiarity with using photography and, audio and video equipment, radios, and operating motor vehicles.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • General to advanced knowledge of firearms and firearm safety.
  • General knowledge of controlled drugs and safe handling of controlled substances.
Skills:
  • Possess or have ability to obtain a valid state operator/driver’s license for the type vehicle or equipment operated
  • Basic skills of firearm evidence processing to include general fingerprinting skills, serial number restoration skills, NIBIN data entry skills, etc.
  • Time management/case management
  • Working abilities to be independent and to work in a group setting
Certification:
  • Have or be willing to obtain the GPSTC certification for Fingerprint Processing, Photography, or any other job related certification.
OTHER
  • This position does require staff call up in an emergency situation.
  • This position requires less than 50% travel from office to other locations.
Physical Requirements - Depending upon area of assignment:
  • Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, restraining persons and repetitive motions. Work is performed in an office setting, an automobile, and field sites with exposure to noise, diseases, cold and inclement weather that may require the use of protective devices.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
