NIBIN Technician

Salary: $50,040.68 Annually

Position is responsible for providing forensic technical support to the Firearms Section. Renders firearms safe, coordinates the pick-up and return of National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) evidence, responsible for ammunition purchasing and maintaining reference standards, assists with reagent preparation, as well as, assisting in ordering materials and supplies for the NIBIN computer system and general Firearms Section. The NIBIN Technician is guided in judgment by Laboratory Policy and Standard Operating Procedures and all tenets of applicable law. Must rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assignments in a timely manner with a high emphasis on placing information into the various data formats. Overall laboratory operation and safety procedures, proper reporting of accidents, and the ability to learn new skills to accommodate changes in techniques. Position reports to the Forensic Scientist Supervisor - Firearms.

Duties

Position Responsibilities
  • Responsible for reception of NIBIN evidence for the laboratory
  • Enters NIBIN eligible evidence into NIBIN
  • Compiles the correlation results for the Forensic Scientists-Firearms
  • Maintains NIBIN equipment and supplies required for equipment operation
  • Acts as liaison for the laboratory to Ultra Electronics Forensic Technology Inc., and the NIBIN Congress regional representative
  • Maintains Firearms evidence vaults and enter evidence into the Laboratory Information Management System
  • Assists the Forensic Scientists in the Firearms Section with evidence custody issues
  • Renders firearms safe for examination
  • Assists in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of the section’s instruments
  • Responsible for recording information in the section’s log books
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Criminology, or related science courses. Five (5) years’ experience in crime scene processing, five (5) years’ law enforcement experience from a certified law enforcement academy or five (5) years’ professional firearms industry experience may be used as a degree equivalent. It is essential to have knowledge of and proficiency with all evidence protocols for transporting, receiving, marking, sealing, storage, filing and return of physical evidence. Incumbent shall be capable of learning firearms nomenclature and capture/enter images and data into a highly specialized computer system. Must possess the ability to learn and employ safe handling techniques for biologically contaminated evidence, practice safe chemical hygiene, and handle firearms safely. Must be highly motivated, be able to work independently and be able to adapt to changes in techniques, evidence flow/volume within the section. Must have the ability to make detailed notes describing evidence received; processes used; and triaging requests for forensic analysis. Must be able to triage an incoming request for analysis. Incumbent shall maintain proficiency through annual proficiency testing. Incumbent must be willing and capable of completing an internal/external training program determined by the Forensic Scientist Supervisor - Firearms and the Quality Assurance Program, and capable of completing additional specialized training, as required or available, from Federal, State, Local agencies and other organizations. Must have basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and familiarity with the sensitive and confidential nature of evidence managing and examination. Must be able to establish and set priorities according to time sensitive information in order to have continued success in this position. Must be able to communicate effectively in oral, verbal, and written formats.
Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Criminology, related science courses, or law enforcement, including minimum qualifications listed.
