Crime Scene Technician

Wichita Falls Police Department, Wichita Falls, Texas

Salary: $21.81 - $27.27 per hour

The purpose of this position is to assist officers with the processing of crime scenes and evidence, evidence collection and documentation, fingerprint examination and comparison, prepare reports for court cases, and give court testimony. This is accomplished by responding to crime scenes and documenting scenes through videography, photography, diagram and measurements, collecting and packaging evidence, collecting and comparing fingerprints, maintaining digital images, examining items for trace evidence, and photographing and fingerprinting victims, suspects, and new employees. Other duties include speaking, interacting and working with other agencies, the public and internal departments.

Duties

Code Essential Functions
  • Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice
  • Responds to crime scenes by documenting scenes through photos, videos and diagrams, measuring, processing evidence for fingerprints, examining items for trace evidence, packaging and transporting evidence, collecting shoe and tire impressions, completing gunshot residue tests on suspects, performing presumptive tests for semen and blood, taking samples when necessary, and transporting evidence.
  • Completes work orders by processing related evidence, photographing results, checking fingerprints, preparing diagrams, evidence logs, wound charts, firearms forms, copying information and writing reports.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining equipment, stocking supplies, and reviewing inventory.
  • Trains new employees by reviewing and observing work, developing and distributing training materials, and speaking to citizens regarding processes.
  • Collects DNA and known fingerprints by collecting buccal swabs, taking finger and palm prints, confirming identities, writing reports and testifying in court.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Formal Education:
  • Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Experience:
  • No experience required
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Driver’s License Required
