Forensic Scientist (Latent Print)

Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Salary: $61,590.05 - $97,360.22 per year

Under direct supervision, trains in an assigned discipline of forensic science and is responsible for testing evidence and accurately reporting results for the adjudication of criminal matters in courts of record regarding the assigned discipline and performs other duties related to the forensic science discipline.

Duties

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
  • Obtains, examines, and analyzes evidence (e.g., blood, seminal fluid, saliva, fire debris, seized drugs, urine, friction ridge impressions, firearms, and ammunition), and evaluates, interprets, and compares resultant data
  • Utilizes specialized equipment, instrumentation, and software pertinent to the forensic science discipline (e.g., comparison microscope, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, genetic analyzer, measuring instruments, reference materials, and reagents)
  • Accurately reports results of testing through written laboratory certificates of analysis
  • Explains laboratory examinations and results as applicable to individuals investigating cases and/or involved in the legal system, including to police officers and attorneys
  • Testifies in municipal, tribal, state, and federal courts of law as needed
  • Responsible for the integrity and strict security of evidence and chain of custody records
  • Manages assignments to meet deadlines, and maintains a reasonable caseload by planning, scheduling, and coordinating laboratory work
  • Attends meetings, workshops, seminars, continuing education classes and other training as required
  • Must report to work on a regular and timely basis

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Must meet the following:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one of the physical, chemical, forensic, or biological sciences; experience working in a forensic laboratory preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class “D” Driver License.
  • Advanced degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or related natural science preferred.
