The Onondaga County Center for Forensic Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time Forensic Scientist I, II, or III position. The level to which the position will be filled will be dependent on the qualifications of the individual hired. The Center for Forensic Sciences is a full-service ANAB accredited forensic laboratory outfitted with state of the art equipment and technology. The Forensic Laboratories provide high quality scientific laboratory services in support of the administration of justice and public safety programs for the citizens of Onondaga and surrounding counties. Onondaga County is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in upstate NY. The laboratory is located in city of Syracuse, within a five-hour drive from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal. Duties

The work involves responsibility for collecting evidence, performing scientific testing and analyses of unknown biological substances/DNA and evidentiary material required in criminal investigations, preparation and presentation of findings in notes and written reports, serving as an expert witness in court, performing technical review of casework and performing quality control and quality assurance related tasks. All work is performed in accordance with Federal and State accreditation requirements and departmental procedure manuals and guidelines.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: **Candidates not meeting the minimum qualifications as listed below will not be considered**
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees within the last ten (10) years with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field which must include or be supplemented by a minimum of nine (9) semester or equivalent hours of coursework (graduate/undergraduate) covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, in addition coursework in statistics and/or population genetics must be completed for the Forensic Scientist I position and,
    • Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist II position or
    • Five (5) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a Forensic Scientist (Biology) for the Forensic Scientist III position
NOTE:
  • A Master's or Doctorate (Ph.D.) in natural science, forensic science, criminalistics, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Candidates considered for appointment will be required to undergo a State and national criminal history background investigation which will include a fingerprint check to determine suitability for appointment. Failure to meet the standards for the background investigation may result in disqualification.
