Crime Scene Technician

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, Slidell, Louisiana

Salary: $45,587.00 – $55,931.00 per year

After two (2) years, Crime Scene Technicians may be trained in a second forensic discipline, typically friction ridge analysis. Locates, identifies, and collects evidence at crime scenes. The Crime Scene Technician (CST) evaluates processes, documents, sketches, and photographs evidence for use in criminal and civil cases. Additional duties may be assigned by a commanding officer.

Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Process crime scene(s), including a victim’s body or remains, to locate and collect physical evidence for scientific evaluation.
  • Lift, collect, develop, and identify latent fingerprints from crime scenes using scientific techniques. Collect known fingerprints.
  • Photographically document crime scenes using various techniques.
  • Distinguish colors to determine test results.
  • Prepare reagents and standards for use in latent print development and quality control procedures.
  • Create court worthy reports and documentation.
  • Testify in court regarding findings and processing methods.
  • Submit properly packaged and labeled evidence. Operate a variety of computer systems for recording,
  • tracking and examining evidence and reporting results.
  • Safely operate a crime scene vehicle to and from crime scenes in all lighting/weather conditions.
  • Contribute to the implementation, maintenance and improvement of the management system.
  • Contribute to the identification and prevention of departures from policy and procedure.
  • Friction Ridge Analyst: Identifies by comparison latent fingerprints using computer databases and/or manual means.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Sixty (60) hour of college education in the field of forensics or related field or a minimum of two (2) years criminal law enforcement experience and must successfully complete an internal training program required per accreditation standards.
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a forensic science field or closely related field is preferred.
  • POST (Police Officer Standard Training) Level 1 certified or ability to obtain a POST Level 1 certification.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Write court worthy reports and professional business correspondence. Effectively present information and respond to questions from law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and court officials. Must be proficient in the English Language.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Calculate figures, distance, weights, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Valid Louisiana Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Proof of residency of St. Tammany Parish, Birth certificate (minimum age of 21 years), Social Security Card, POST (Police Officer Standard Training) Level 1 certified or ability to obtain a POST Level 1 certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Regular use of hands and fingers to handle or feel; Reach above head with hands and arms; Balance or climb (on steps and ladders); Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; Talk or hear; Smell. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Due to the nature of this job, the employee must sometimes work in remote locations and must be able to maneuver in these areas, such as jump over ditches, crawl underneath automobiles, and climb over fences. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work environment includes exposure to outside weather conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious positions; fume or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold or heat; risk of electrical shock; moderate noise levels, and blood borne pathogens.
PLEASE NOTE:
  • This position requires day and evening shifts with on call hours, including nights, weekends and holidays. Also, this position requires activation for any emergency disaster responses.
