Evidence Property Technician

Duties

80% Handling, receiving, security, chain of custody and disposal of evidence; 15% - Administrative; 5% - Training.

• Abide by the “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.”
• Thoroughly know, understand and comply with Agency procedures, rules and operational directives, evidence procedures and chain of custody.
• Receive and maintain custody of all evidence and other property turned into the Evidence Unit Property Section. Take custody of all evidence from central evidence lockers on a daily basis.
• Maintain all records required for the proper storage and disposition of evidence and other property.
• Prepare laboratory submission forms for specific examinations, submit evidence to laboratory, and disseminate results of laboratory findings.
• Release/return property to owners upon receipt of proper authorization for release.
• Release evidence to officers or other authorized personnel for investigation or court.
• Thoroughly know and understand the Florida Statutes pertaining to evidence disposal, records retention and public records.
• Dispose of evidence and other property according to Florida Statutes.
• Use audio and video equipment for making copies. Perform general office work such as typing or keying, filing, answer telephones, etc.
• Keep the work area and equipment in good condition and neat in appearance.
• Assist the Evidence Property Room Supervisor Manager as required.
• Ensure that the security and integrity of all evidence is preserved at all times, and that proper chain of custody is maintained.
• Be alert for conditions or situations which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency or the Forensic Unit and make recommendations for solutions.
• Perform presentation of case evidence to prosecutors and defense attorneys.
• Abide by the “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
• Thoroughly know, understand and comply with Agency procedures, rules and operational directives, evidence procedures and chain of custody.
• Perform any additional duties required by the Sheriff or through necessity of situations.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Knowledge, skills, and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Ability to follow instructions, organizes own work, and use general office machines.
• Ability to effectively communicate information, both oral and written.
• Ability to handle confidential matters without compromising confidentiality.
• Ability to keep accurate records.
• Ability to use computer for data entry and retrieval.
• Ability to work harmoniously with the public and other Agency personnel.
• Proficiency in English language grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Possess a valid Florida Driver's License.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Warehouse and office type working environment. This is a special risk position which may be exposed to various diseases and chemicals due to handling of biohazardous and contaminated materials sometimes under dirty, dusty and soiled conditions. May require outdoor work under extreme conditions. Normal office hours but may be required to work overtime. Requires long periods of standing, and also stooping, bending, climbing stairs, step ladders, and lifting of heavy objects.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: R

• equires light to medium work that involves walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, bending, climbing stairs, step ladders, and crouching for extended periods of times. Exerting between 20 and 40 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

• This position risks exposure to disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, dusts, fumes and/or noxious odors, and heights.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

• Requires normal vision acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception and texture perception to perform the essential physical and cognitive function of the position.
